  • December 2011 -Old Ruts Coach wins National Award!

    Congratulations to Stacia…..

Facing competition from across the whole of England, Stacia Long, our U13’s coach and Head of the Graveney School Rugby Academy Stacia Long has won the “Young Peoples Coach of the Year” award from the RFU.

This is a very well deserved award for Stacia as all of us who know her recognise the huge amount of effort she puts in across school and club to maximize the opportunity to play rugby for all standards of player.

  • Ruts play at Twickenham

More than 300 of us travelled to Twickenham, part of a record breaking crowd to watch the Quinns v Saracens 'big game'. An expecially memorable day for some of our U9s, U10s and U11s that got to play a game on the pitch beforehand.

  • Silverware heads to Poplar Road

A big shout first for the U13’s who on Saturday October 1st played on the full sized Stoop pitch at Harlequins in the final of the SGOSS Cup (a Quins organised cup for U13’s only) and won the cup by beating a very plucky but outgunned Pulborough.

Over at the Kings A Festival on Sunday our newest squad the U7’s won the cup!

  • Mini Festival at Poplar Road

Sunday October 2nd saw an U12’s only festival with guests from Old Emanuel, Old Reigatians, London Scottish, Brighton and, near neighbours, Wimbledon providing the opposition.

In baking heat, all the teams competed really well with Wimbledon eventually running out the winners of the plate and Brighton A’s beating Old Ruts A’s in a titanic Cup final with both teams playing some superb hard rugby but Brighton just deserving their 2 try to nil victory.

Our thanks to Mick and Perry for presenting the pitches so well, Mike Stallard, Colin Walsh and Tiny Stokes for reffing, to Elaine Harrison for putting in a huge organizational stint to make it all happen in advance and run it on the day and to Simon Englefield, Head coach of the U12’s, whose idea it was in the first place.

  • Junior Development Day 17th July

Trials for pupils nominated by their Merton Primary School from Years 3, 4, 5 & 6. At the trial were 65 pupils from 16 Primary Schools.

The morning was a huge success due to the generous time volunteered by members of the Ruts, players (young and old!), coaches and parents. We also had Tim Hall from Harlequins to carry out sprint testing. This trial gave the impression of organisation, efficiency, professionalism and most of all, the all important ‘welcoming’ factor that was commented by many parents. We also had a parent taking photos throughout the morning and the link to all these photos were distributed to all the parents of players attending the trials which was also greatly appreciated by those in attendance. Children at the trial were assessed for speed, agility, handling, contact and game sense scored on a scale of 1 to 5. The ‘all -round’ assessments provided data on the players and were included in their personalised results letters. We unearthed some exceptional talent, some physically imposing players and a lot of raw potential.

On Sunday 4th September all these new players and parents will come to down to meet the club proper.

  • Under 11's power into Cup Finals..

The U11's had a great day in the semi finals of the Quins Curtain Raiser Cup on Sunday beating Richmond, Ironsides and a massive Sidcup team to top their group and qualify for Finals Day in early April.

To reach the last 8 of a competition open to the best teams in the South East is a fantastic achievement and they will return to the Stoop hoping to progress even further!

  • Old Ruts U21's lose but still qualify for Surrey U21 plate semis...

A scrappy but hard fought match against Old Alleynians saw the U21's lose 26 - 10 to a slightly more powerful, but definitely fitter side!

A second half try during the best passage of play from OR looked like the start of a comeback but 2 late tries from OA's, as their fitness and power eventually told, ensured defeat.

However with a win over Sutton & Epsom and a w/o v Kings Old Ruts have advanced to the plate semi finals of this new cup, details of which will of course be found here in due course.
