International Caps for Ruts Duo
02 August 2010
The whole club is very proud of two of our youth players, Jack Walsh and Tom Margetson, who have won U18 international caps for Ireland in the FIRA tournament played in Italy back in April.
Jack has come through firstly the minis ranks at Ruts (starting at the young age of four and a half) and then all the way through the Juniors, with Tom a relative late starter with the U11's having only been in the C team at school.
Tom started at Ruts as a hard tackling No 8 - during his seven years at Ruts he switched to prop and was picked up by the Wasps Academy in 2004 going on to represent Middlesex from U15 onwards and captaining the side at U17 and U18. Whilst Tom has clearly benefitted from the county coaching structure he is the first to pay tribute to all the help and support he has had from his coaches at Ruts, Colin Walsh, Dave Ruddock, Billy Saunders, Martin Howell and Graham Blenman.
Jack was at Ruts from a very early age and soon established himself at scrum half, going on to represent Surrey at U15/16/17, being part of the England squad at U16 and captaining his school side at John Fisher.
Both were key members of the U18's squad at Ruts which stayed in Surrey 1's all the way from U13's and the lads have kindly offered to come and do some coaching with the Juniors at the start of the new season. Their success is a great example to all our players of what can be achieved from hard work, determination and a helping hand from the Mighty Ruts!
